Summer Residences at Land’s End, Rockport, Mass., 1910

As you can see from the photo below, these two houses still stand (with a third house now dividing them) on Penzance Road at the eastern end of Pebble Beach in Rockport. This is a real photo postcard bearing a postmark of Aug. 17, 1910. According to the note written on the back, the house on the left was built of stones collected from the beach.

In this map of Land’s End published in 1885, these houses are not shown. Thus, they were built sometime between 1885 and 1910.

Anyone have more information about either of these houses? If so, please share in the comments below.

The house on the right has been maintained beautifully. Although it has been renovated and modified both outside and inside, it still retails all it’s interior period details. Stunning Craftsman styling throughout

  2. Margot says:

The stone house on the left was originally owned by the Sanborn family of Chase & Sanborn Coffee fame. In recent years the house was rented out by its owners and became a “party house” by the tenants. New owners seem to be taking care of it again.

Do you know if it is still rented to responsible parties? Our son and his wife had their wedding reception here. It was wonderful. – Mary Ann

The stone house on the left was owned and lived in by my Mother and Father from 1955 to my Dad’s passing in 1992. My family has many fond memories of two weddings and many happy times. I am very happy to see that the new owners are doing some renovations, and hopefully it will again be loved by its owners

Greetings from the current owners of the popplestone house! We are indeed in love with this home and are doing our best to restore it. We are always interested in hearing more about its history and from those who have enjoyed its hospitality before. Come on by and we’ll take you for a tour!

family had rented this home during the summers and we just loved it. I’m happy to see that someone is restoring it and will love it. i stopped by a few years back and the contractor was working on the kitchen. He of course could not let me in, but i’d love to stop by again and see what you have done to the place. Very meaningful memories for our family there.

I have lived in the Southend of Rockport all my life. We are beginning to plan a family wedding and was wondering if you ever rented out the property particularly the yard for events?
